The Green Gourmet Story

Green Gourmet has been a proud part of the Sydney plant-based and vegan dining community since 1998, crafting delicious, 100% plant-based food that celebrates the rich flavours and tradition of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine.

Our vision is to create compassion and responsibility for the future and our mission is to celebrate nature through our creativity expressed through convenient and accessible plant-based food offerings.

As a family-owned and operated business, we pour our love into every dish and product we create, striving to not only nourish our customers' bodies but also delight their taste buds with our unique and creative approach to plant-based cuisine. We believe that by embracing a plant-based lifestyle, we can not only improve our health but also make a positive impact on the planet.

Our passion for creating compassion and responsibility for the future through the celebration of nature in our convenient and accessible plant-based food offerings is evident in every dish we serve. From our founder, Colin's, pioneering spirit in introducing tofu dishes in 1984 at his first Chinese restaurant, Gourmet Inn to our current menu at Green Gourmet St Leonards (mo. We strive to source our ingredients from sustainable and local sources whenever possible.

With the success of the Newtown restaurant, he established another Green Gourmet restaurant in St Leonards in 2001 with the support of his sister, Gloria.

Since 2008, we have been showcasing an array of vegan cakes and sweet treats. Now over a decade on, we have achieved numerous vegan dessert creations (do check them out on our online store); many of which are gluten-free and refined sugar free.

In August 2019, we celebrated 21 years in serving plant based food to the thriving community of Sydney.

Like the majority of small businesses, we faced numerous hurdles as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 & 2021, and then faced a fire accident in the Newtown kitchen late 2021.

We made the difficult decision to permanently close the Newtown restaurant in May 2022, and our St Leonards restaurant permanently closed on 24th May, 2025 due to a building demolition.

As of June 26th 2025, we reopened as a takeaway service from our Lane Cove West kitchen, and continue selling frozen retail Love Buns and Simply RehEAT products from various independent stores including: IGA Thai Kee in Haymarket, Chay Mart and Greens Supermarket in Newtown.
